Switzerland are coming off of their second successive victory in the tournament heading into this match. On the other hand, Spain, too, have picked up their second win, after drawing their first two encounters in the group stages. Let’s take an in-depth look into both teams.

Switzerland v Spain Prediction - Preview

Switzerland

Switzerland defied the odds by beating World Cup champions and tournament favourites France in the round of 16 (3-3, 5-4 on penalties). Haris Seferovic opened the scorelines at just 15 minutes, giving the Swiss the lead at the half. However, Karim Benzema struck with a brace 2 minutes apart early in the second half. Paul Pogba then added another goal, putting the French far ahead in front. But the improbable happened when Seferovic once again scored at the 81st minute, and Mario Gavranovic put in another goal at the full-time mark to level with the Bleus. The game continued on until the penalty shootout, with the Swiss  converting the first five kicks, and Kylian Mbappe having his shot saved by Yann Sommer, completing the upset for the A Team. Vladimir Petkovic and his men now advance to meet Spain, who themselves have had a phenomenal game earlier that evening.

  • This is Switzerland’s 4th quarter-final appearance in the WC/EUROs combined, but their first ever in the EURO. The A Team have lost in the three previous instances: 2-3 to Czechoslovakia (1934), 0-2 to Hungary (1938) and 5-7 to Austria (1954).
  • The Swiss have scored 3 goals in each of their last 2 EURO matches, having not scored more than twice in any of their first 15 in the tournament. They last scored 3+ goals in 3 successive matches in October 2017.

Spain

Spain were in another thriller with Croatia, as they prevailed in their high-scoring match, 5-3. Pedri had an own-goal 21 minutes in, giving the Vatrani the early lead. Paolo Sarabia rectified the mistake 18 minutes later with a beauty of a goal. Cesar Azpilicueta (57′) and Ferran Torres (77′) put La Roja further ahead, but the Croats were able to catch up as Mislav Orsic (85′) and Mario Pasalic (90+2′) scored as the second half ended. The Spaniards finally got the win in extra time, with Alvaro Morata (100′) and Mikel Oyarzabal (103′) scoring the winning deuce. Manager Luis Enrique hailed his team’s spirit in the hard-earned victory, but the quest is not yet over as they face a Swiss side riding high on the momentum of their upset against the world champions.

  • Spain have lost only once in their 22 meetings with Switzerland in all competitions (W16 D5) – in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
  • La Roja became the first team in EURO history to score 5+ goals in successive games. In each of their first 42 games in the competition, they never scored more than 4 goals.

Switzerland v Spain Prediction - Final Thoughts

Switzerland will be eager to put on another world-class performance after the miracle win against the French. However, Spain will be more cautious, and will draw from their own experience in the Croatia game to prevent a Swiss upset. We expect Seferovic, Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka to be in the lineup for the Swiss. However,  they will face stiff opposition by Morata, Torres and Sergio Busquets, who will overcome the stubborn Swiss and move on to the semi-final.  Let’s take a look at the prediction.
