Portugal v France Prediction - Form (All Competitions)

Portugal won big in their first EURO match over Hungary, but fell short in Matchday 2 against Germany. France was victorious over the Germans on their first day, but settled for a 1-1 draw with the Hungarians, keeping an undefeated record for five  games across all competitions. Let’s take an in-depth look into both teams.

Portugal v France Prediction - Preview

Portugal are at third in Group F, and have a shot at qualifying for the knockout stages. They suffered a painful 2-4 loss at the hands of second-placer Germany. Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo put the Seleccao in front at 15′ with a spectacular end-to-end play that culminated in him tapping in the ball from a Diogo Jota assist. But the jubilation was short-lived, as Ruben Dias’ challenge of a Kai Havertz attempt resulted in an own-goal at 35 minutes, allowing the Germans to level. Another own-goal was caused by Raphael Guerrero off of a challenge attempt at Thomas Muller to put the Mannschaft in the driver’s seat. Havertz then doubled the lead 17 minutes after the start of the second half, and Robin Gosens followed it up with a goal nine minutes later. At the 67th minute Jota right-footed the ball in from a Ronaldo pass. However, the Germans held on to the lead for their first EURO 2020 victory. Head coach Fernando Santos remarked that it was “a day to cry” for his side, and that they had to return to their Matchday 1 fighting form as they take on the Bleus.

  • The 1-0 victory of Portugal over France in EURO 2016 was the only win the Seleccao has had over the Bleus in their last 13 matches (D1 L11).
  • This will be the first time Portugal will be meeting France in the group stage of a major tournament. France won their semifinal encounters in EURO 1984 and 2000 and WC 2006; while Portugal won their final match with France in EURO 2016.

France are holding firm on top of the “group of death” after mixed fortunes in their first two matches. After riding on a high after their rout of Germany on day 1, they were humbled by underdogs Hungary with a 1-1 draw. The Bleus dominated the first half of their clash with the Hungarians, with Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe coming close to scoring. However, a costly mistake at the back gave Hungary the chance to counter-attack, with Attila Fiola giving the Magyarok the lead at the half. The French were able to level at the 66th minute with Antoine Griezmann shooting a goal off of Willi Orban’s clearance. However, both sides failed to score any more thereafter. Despite the draw, head coach Didier Deschamps was still satisfied with the turnout and praised the Magyarok’s effort. They are now looking for revenge against their 2016 finals opponent in their next fixture, which is shaping up to be a much-anticipated encounter.

  • After their 1-1 draw with Hungary in Matchday 2, France have avoided defeat while trailing at halftime in more matches than any other side in EURO history.
  • The Bleus are undefeated in each of their last 11 group stage matches across the World Cups and EUROs (W7 D4). But their last three Matchday 3 games in each tournament all ended in a draw.

Portugal v France Prediction - Final Thoughts

Even with their recent loss, Portugal have shown that they are a formidable side, which has depth and talent beyond the ubiquitous Ronaldo. However, France are just as much the same team who won the World Cup three years ago, and they have the capability to control any match. This promises to be just as exciting a clash as the Portugal-Germany meeting; and we see the Bleus winning this in a close one.  Let’s take a look at the prediction.
