Man City v Chelsea Match Prediction - Preview

Manchester City F.C.

Man City continues to be on top of the EPL table, 10 points clear of Chelsea. Their last league game saw them beat Arsenal 1-2 at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners broke the deadlock on 31 minutes when Bukayo Saka slotted in Kieran Tierney’s pass. However, the Citizens were able to level at the 57th minute on Riyad Mahrez’s penalty after Granit Xhaka took down Bernardo Silva. Gabriel Magalhaes was sent off two minutes later on a second yellow card, and Rodri salvaged a last-minute goal in stoppage to seal the win. Pep Guardiola’s men also had a dominant performance in the FA Cup seven days later, thrashing Swindon Town 1-4. Bernardo Silca, Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan and Cole Palmer each contributed a netter to this stunning performance.

  • Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling has scored 49 Premier League goals at the Etihad Stadium, and could become only the second player to reach 50 at the venue in the competition after Sergio Aguero, with 106.
  • After beating Liverpool 4-0 in July 2020, and Chelsea 1-0 earlier this season, City are looking to become the fourth English club to win three consecutive meetings with reigning European champions in all competitions, after Notts County (1982), Tottenham Hotspur (1983/84) and Everton (1984/85).

Chelsea F.C.

Chelsea are seated second in the league table, with Liverpool just one point behind them. They started off the year drawing with the Reds, 2-2. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah’s goals had Liverpool up by two 26 minutes into the game. But just before stoppage, Mateo Kovacic volleyed in on a parry by Caoimhin Keller, and Christian Pulisic finished home N’Golo Kante’s pass, tying up the game. Following this game, Thomas Tuchel’s side had a three-game winning streak. The Blues beating Tottenham in both legs of their EFL Cup semi-final (aggregate 0-3) thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Antonio Rudiger. They also shone in the FA Cup, as they thrashed Chesterfield 5-1, with Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Romelu Lukaku, Andreas Christensen and Hakim Ziyech contributing a netter each.

  • This is just the second ever Premier League meeting between Man City and Chelsea as the top two sides in the division. The other came in January 2015, with second-placed City earning a 1-1 draw at leaders Chelsea.
  • City’s Kevin De Bruyne has been involved in four goals in his last four Premier League matches against his former club Chelsea (three goals and one assist). Overall, he has scored four PL goals against the Blues, only finding the net more times in the competition against Arsenal (five).

Man City v Chelsea Match Prediction - Final Thoughts

Even as Man City loses key players like Riyad Mahrez to AFCON duty and Phil Foden to Covid, Guardiola has more than enough personnel to handle their London opponents. We can’t say the same for Chelsea, who took a beating from three straight games across all competitions. Thus, we think the more well-rested Blues from Manchester should handily see off the London-based squad. Let’s take a look at our predictions.
