Italy has yet to experience anything less than a win in the EUROs, as they breezed through the first two knockout stages after sweeping the group stage. Spain have also been undefeated in their last three matches after starting off their EURO campaign with two draws. Let’s take an in-depth look into both teams.

Italy v Spain Prediction - Preview

Italy

Italy showed that they are still the team to beat in the competition, as they beat the top-ranked side in the world, Belgium (2-1) to progress to the semi-finals. Nicolo Barrera made the breakthrough in the 31st minute with a beautiful strike after evading the Belgian defence. Lorenzo Insigne doubled the lead with a curling kick past the reach of Thibaut Courtois. A minute later Belgium got a break, as they were awarded a penalty when Giovanni di Lorenzo shoved Jeremy Doku in the box. Romelu Lukaku converted to bring the Red Devils within one,  but the Italian defence proved too much for them as the Azzurri held on and claimed their spot in the next round. Manager Roberto Mancini hailed his side’s extraordinary win, claiming that they could have scored more goals. They now face a challenge in a Spanish side that was lucky to make it to the knockout phase, but have been extraordinary since then.

  • Italy have won the EUROs once in 1968 on home soil, and have been runners-up twice since – in 2000 and to Spain in 2012.
  • The Azzurri’s win against Austria in the last 16 was their 3rd in their 7 games at Wembley, with the previous 6 all against England (W2 D3 L1). Their only loss at Wembley was a 2-0 loss in the WC 1978 qualifiers.

Spain

Spain punched their ticket to the semi-finals via a thrilling win over Switzerland in a game determined by a penalty shootout (1-1, 3-1 penalties). The Swiss, who knocked out powerhouse France in the previous round, found themselves trailing behind at the 8th minute, as Denis Zakaria’s deflection of Koke’s shot went into the net for an own-goal. The A Team were able to equalise in the second half as Xherdan Shqiri scored from within the box. The deadlock would stand until the end of extra time, and Spain would go on to dominate the penalty shootout, with Unai Simon saving three successive penalties after missing the first one, and La Roja’s penalty takers scoring 3 out of 5. With the win, manager Luis Enrique’s side have set up a rematch of the 2012 EURO final against the Italians, who will be their biggest challenge yet.

  • Spain have lost 5 of their 9 games at Wembley (W2 D2), although they won their most recent (2-1) against England in the UEFA Nations League in September 2018.
  • Each time Spain won their EURO quarter-final, they went on to lift the trophy.

Italy v Spain Prediction - Final Thoughts

Italy are simply flawless and are unbelievable in this competition. Spain, on the other hand, have always started slow, but managed to wrest the win in the end. It will be a thrilling match between the two sides; however the Azzurri’s consistency in the tournament, as well as their ability to dominate a game throughout will work for them against La Roja, and they look to be victorious for their first EURO final since 2012. Let’s take a look at the prediction.
