France have settled for a second draw in the group stage, resulting in an unbeaten record for their last five matches in all competitions. Switzerland, have had mixed results in all of their group stage matches, ending their campaign with a win. Let’s take an in-depth look into both teams.

France v Switzerland Prediction - Preview

France

France ended their campaign at the top of Group F with 5 points and a goal difference of 1 (4 for, 3 against). They ended their campaign by drawing with 2016 EURO champions Portugal, 2-2. Karim Benzema scored both of Les’ Bleus goals – a penalty conversion in first half stoppage time, and a strike at the beginning of the first half. This was countered by Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace, which both were penalties. Manager Didier Deschamps was still proud that his side finished in a “very complicated” group, and vowed that there would be more to come from them. Could they keep their usual form against the Swiss A-Team, which is also brimming with talent?

  • France are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with Switzerland (W3 D4). This is their longest unbeaten run against the Swiss, however, four of their last five meetings ended in a draw.
  • Les Bleus have lost just one of their 17 matches in EUROs/World Cups combined (W12 D4) – the 2016 final with Portugal.

Switzerland

Switzerland were able to qualify in the knockout stages despite finishing third in Group A, with a total of 4 points and a -1 goal difference (4 for, 5 against). They nabbed their first win in the tournament against Turkey, 3-1, at the Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan. The Swiss got the early lead off of Haris Seferovic at the 6th minute. Xherdan Shaqiri followed it up 20 minutes later, and the A-Team led by half-time 2-0. Irfhan Kahveci pulled the Turks closer by one at around 20 minutes after the second half began, but Shaqiri responded 7 minutes later with his second goal of the game, and Switzerland held on to win. Manager Vladimir Petkovic is now looking ahead to the battle with France, who have been shorthanded with some injuries. However, he maintained that Les Bleus still have many players to choose from, and they will stick to their usual game plan.

  • Switzerland will be meeting France for the first time in a knockout stage in a major competition. They have met previously in the group stage four times (EURO 2004, WC 2006, WC 2014, EURO 2016).
  • The A-Team have reached the knockout stages at each of their last four major tournament appearances (WC 2014, EURO 2016, WC 2018, EURO 2020). In the previous three instances, they were eliminated in the first round after the group stages.

France v Switzerland Prediction - Final Thoughts

France is coming into the match with some key injuries, as opposed to Switzerland’s fully-healthy lineup. Even in this case, however, France remains one of the most well-rounded sides in the competition. Their combination of hard-nosed defence and precise attacking is something the Swiss will find hard to match. Even with the likes of Shaqiri having a phenomenal performance in the EUROs, the reigning world champions should easily cruise past the A Team into the quarter-final. Let’s take a look at the prediction.
