Belgium have swept their group stage matches, keeping an undefeated streak in their last five games. Portugal, on the other hand, have recorded a win, a loss and a draw in the “group of death”. Let’s take an in-depth look into both teams.

Belgium v Portugal Prediction - Preview

Belgium

Belgium ended the group stage on a high note by finishing at the top of Group B with nine points and a goal difference of 6 (7 for, 1 against). Their last match saw them defeating Finland 2-0 at the Saint Petersburg Stadium. The Red Devils and the Eagle-owls had been engaged in a close contest for nearly 75 minutes, when Lukas Hradecky inadvertedly directed Kevin De Bruyne’s corner into the net for an own-goal. Seven minutes later, Romelu Lukaku finished off the Finns with a right-footed strike into the net, after receiving De Bruyne’s feed in the box. Manager Roberto Martinez was delighted by his side’s performance, singling out the performances of the returning injured players like De Bruyne and Eden Hazard. Now, their attention turns to the round of 16 and Portugal, who despite an inconsistent first round is still deep enough to take them on.

  • Belgium have only failed to score in two of their last 58 games under Martinez, averaging three goals per game in that stretch. The games of note were their 0-1 loss to France in the 2018 World Cup semi0final, and a 0-0 draw with Portugal in June 2018.
  • The Red Devils reached the knockout stages in each of their last five appearances in major tournaments (WC/EUROs), progressing to the 2018 WC semi-final. Their defeat to France in that game is the only one of their last matches they failed to win (W9).

Portugal

Portugal ended their campaign in the “group of death” at 3rd place, recording four points and a goal difference of 1 (7 for, 6 against). They figured in a tense battle with France in their last group stage match, drawing them 2-2. The first half ended 1-1, as Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema converted penalties for each of their sides. Benzema then scored a goal immediately after the half, giving the French the lead. But that was short-lived, as Ronaldo made yet another penalty conversion at the 60th minute after Jules Koundle handled the ball in the box. Of the draw, manager Fernando Santos simply stated that his men “did what they had to do” Now that they are through to the knockout stages, they now have to take on the number one ranked team in the world, Belgium, to progress further and keep their crown.

  • Portugal are unbeaten in their last five matches against Belgium across all competitions (W3 D2) since a 0-3 defeat in a World Cup qualifier in 1989.
  • The Selecao have qualified for the knockout stages of the EUROs by being 3rd in their group for the second time in a row (after 2016 where they won the title).
