Pedri wins Golden Boy - Player's Statement
Barça announced the reveal on its Twitter account, and lauded the midfielder for his feat. “Pedri wins the Golden Boy award! Congratulations, Pedri!” the club shared on the social media network.
The Spain international also expressed his gratitude in an official statement. “I want to thank Tuttosport for this trophy which makes me so proud,” Pedri said. “Thanks also to the members of my team and the fans who have always supported me throughout a 2021 which for me has been simply incredible.
“Of course, I want to thank Barcelona, the national side, my family, my friends and everyone who has been with me day-in-day-out without whose help I would not have been able to win the Golden Boy award,” he continued.
Pedri wins Golden Boy - A Historic Stint
Pedri joined Barca in 2020 when he was 17 years old and playing for Las Palmas. He then went on to have a remarkable run at Camp Nou. In his first season, he made 52 appearances and won the Copa del Rey. He also starred for Spain, as he was crucial in their run to the EURO 2020 semifinals, and was even named the Young Player of the Tournament.
He also saw Olympic action in Tokyo, as was part of the Under-23 team that made the final. Unfortunately, Spain lost the gold to Brazil in extra time.
At the moment, however, Pedri has been sidelined with a thigh injury. As a result, he has only appeared four times for Barça this season and is only expected back in the next few weeks.
Pedri wins Golden Boy - Bayern Munich interested?
Rumours are also swirling that Pedri is being targeted by Bayern Munich. Barça have put a release clause of €1 billion on the midfielder’s deal, but the Bavarian club are willing to quadruple his wages, going so far as to make him their most expensive signing ever. That distinction belongs to the Lucas Hernandez deal in 2019, wherein Bayern paid €80 million to Atletico Madrid to acquire the French defender.
In light of this, it is very possible that the Golden Boy awardee will have to leave the Blaugrana due to the club’s financial woes. It would also be a big blow to new manager Xavi, who recently returned to his boyhood club in grand fashion.
