Gerrard new Aston Villa boss (Sports News) – Legendary Liverpool/England player and Glasgow Rangers head coach Steven Gerrard has been appointed by Premier League club Aston Villa as their new manager. He is taking over the top job in the Birmingham-based club after the sacking of Dean Smith, who oversaw an underwhelming start to the team’s 2021/22 campaign.
The former Reds captain committed to Aston Villa after they offered him the managerial post on a three-and-half year contract, with £4.5 million in total compensation. He is expected to turn around the club in the same manner as he did Rangers, whom he led to its first title in ten years.
Gerrard New Aston Villa Boss - Details
Upon his appointment, Gerrard expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm in leading the legendary organisation. “Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am immensely proud to become its new head coach,” said Gerrard.
“In my conversations with [co-owners] Nassef [Sawiris], Wes [Edens] and the rest of the board, it was apparent how ambitious their plans are for the club and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims.”
Villa chief executive Christian Purlow is well known to Gerrard, as the former used to be managing director of Liverpool. In a statement, Purlow cited Gerrard’s stint as coach at the Liverpool Youth Academy as one of the key factors in hiring him.
Aston Villa are currently 16th place, two spots above the relegation zone. Under Smith’s leadership, they finish as high as 11th in the table. However, they have underperformed since former superstar Jack Grealish moved to Manchester City over the summer.
As boss, Gerrard’s first match in charge will be at Villa Park to host Brighton after the international break.

In light of this news, Rangers thanked Gerrard in an official club statement: “Gerrard moves to the Midlands club having played a key role in the significant growth of the Light Blues in numerous areas during his three-and-a-half years at Ibrox. Rangers now has an outstanding, highly competitive playing squad which is capable of both winning and entertaining on all fronts, with the highest of standards now also prevalent throughout the football department.
“In European competition, Rangers have qualified for group stage football for four successive seasons, and knockout-stage football in the last two, improving not only the club’s standing on the continent, but also that of Scottish Football. Domestically, Rangers have flourished under Gerrard, with that work culminating in the club claiming their 55th title last season on the back of an unbeaten league campaign.
“He now leaves Rangers with the club top of the Scottish Premiership with a Premier Sports Cup semi-final to look forward to and the opportunity to qualify yet again for the knockout stages of the Europa League still in the team’s own hands. Rangers Football Club would like to put on record their thanks to Steven and his staff and wish them every success in the future. They will always be welcome at Ibrox.”
The 41-year-old Gerrard personally thanked the club, saying “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everybody associated with Glasgow Rangers for giving me the opportunity to manage such an iconic football club. Helping them secure a record-breaking 55th league title will always hold a special place in my heart. “I would like to wish the players, staff and supporters the very best for the future.”
