Euro 2020 Allows 26-Player Squads (Sports News) – The Union of European Football Associations or UEFA has given the go-signal to increase the squad members from 23 to 26 in the upcoming Euro 2020 Tournament. This development will be crucial as squads need more people for more player options for the event proper.
This rule change was established to lessen the risk of a shortage of available players for matches due to COVID cases and quarantine measures. It will also help ease the situation if ever one or more players at camp test positive, or if an outbreak occurs during the finals, which begin on 11 June.
Euro 2020 Allows 26-Player Squads - Explanation
UEFA made further confirmation, however, that only 23 players could be selected for each match, with the other three not being on the timesheet. This is in accordance with the International Football Association Board (IFAB) Laws of the Game which state that a maximum of 12 substitutes are needed for top-level international matches. However, to further ease the rules, team managers will be allowed unlimited replacements of players in the 26-man squad until the first fixture. This means if a player has an injury after the squad lineup is submitted on 1 June, there will be a window within they can be replaced.

Also, under the new rules, goalkeepers in the squad cab be replaced throughout the tournament if they are positive for COVID-19. However, once a player has been taken out of the squad, they cannot be readmitted. Teams will be able to make up to five substitutions during the Euro 2020 matches.
The 24-team tournament starts with the Italy-Turkey match at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on 11 June. The final will take place at Wembley Stadium in London, England on 11 July.
Euro 2020 Allows 26-Player Squads - Reactions of Teams
One of the teams set to benefit from the setup is England. Manager Gareth Southgate is agreeable to the setup. He already had 23 men on the lineup, but he also wishes to get three more as they need players who could deliver. In March, Southgate had picked a 26-man contingent for England the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino, Albania and Poland. The lineup included three goalkeepers, ten defenders, seven midfielders and seven forwards. Southgate is expected to announce the final Euro 2020 26-man squad on 24 May.
